Stuart Russell was a gay rights activist and key figure of the Body Politic. Openly gay and a socialist, Russell was fired from his position in the Olympic games coordinating committee in June of 1976, supposedly because he had not been given the necessary security clearance by the RCMP. In July, the Québec Human Rights Commission dropped Russell’s discrimination case against the committee. He was a coordinating committee member of the Gay Coalition Against Repression (CHAR/GCAR) and leader of the Young Socialists.
