Alan Jarvis, sculptor, curator, and arts educator, studied at the University of Toronto and at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He was appointed Director of the National Gallery in Ottawa in 1955 and forced to resign in 1959. He is credited with bringing modern art to the National Gallery.
