Alan V. Miller was one of the first six directors of the ArQuives, Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archives. Miller worked at the Ontario Ministry of Labour for 18 years, during which time he compiled a number of bibliographies for the Ontario Ministry of Labour between September and October 1978, including “Homosexuality and Employment: A Selected Bibliography”, “Homosexuality and Human Rights: A Selected Bibliography”, and “Homosexuality in Specific Fields: The Arts, the Military, the Ministry, Prisons, Sports, Teaching and Transsexuals: A Selected Bibliography.” He organized three three gay history conferences between 1980 to 1985, including Wilde ’82, one of the first international lesbian and gay history conferences to be held in North America. He was a key figure in the Lesbian and Gay History Project, which started in 1980. In 1991, he published Our Own Voices: A Directory of Lesbian and Gay Periodicals, 1890-1990. Miller has been a volunteer archivist at the ArQuives for more than 40 years.
