Alix Dobkin was born into a Jewish Communist family. She joined the folk music movement and got married in 1965, before having a child and divorcing in the early 1970s. She then became an active feminist and came out as lesbian, and both of these influenced her music and her activism. She ushered in the genre of “women’s music.”
