She was a Private of the Canadian Armed Forces who was confronted with alleged lesbianism by the Canadian Forces’ Special Investigations Unit. She was told that it was a matter of national security because lesbianism would make her “susceptible to blackmail.” Upon admitting that she was a lesbian, Thornborrow was given the choice of psychiatric counselling or signing a form that would confirm her lesbianism and release her from the force. She instead decided to make the case public.
