Bill Vander Zalm

Bill Vander Zalm was Minister of Human Resources in British Columbia. In July 1977 he attacked the existence of Gay Workers’ Support Group within the Vancouver Resources Board. In 1978 when employees of the VRB came under the emplyment of Vander Zalm’s ministry, they lost protections from discrimination based on sexual orientation. Later that year Vander Zalm supported statements from Social Credit Party federal leader Lorne Reznowski, who said in an interview “I have the greatest compassion for homosexuals. But it’s a serious psychological disorder. And you don’t cure something by legalising it.”
