Brent Hawkes was elected pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto in 1978. He led and took part in a number of demonstrations throughout the liberation movement, often protesting police harassment of the gay community. For example, he went on a hunger strike to demand an inquiry after the Toronto Bathhouse raids in 1981. He also met with police officials to speak on behalf of the gay community, such as with Toronto Police Chief Jack Ackroyd in December 1981.
