She was appointed chairperson of the Ontario Human Rights Campaign in January 1978. On 3 March of the same year she said that the addition of sexual orientation to the Ontario Human Rights Code was a “non-issue” because Ontarians did not discriminate against gays and lesbians. This statement directly contested reports produced by her organization under her predecessor Dr. Thomas Symons (#TSYM). Crittenden’s appointment marked the departure of activists such as Symons and Rev. Bruce McLeod (#BMCL) from the OHRC.
