She was a member of the Mississauga Library Board and a Mississauga Councilor. On 1 February 1978 the Board cancelled a showing of the film The Naked Civil Servant, which followed the life of the openly gay writer Quentin Crisp. McCallion remarked “I’m not sure a public body should promote a topic that is not generally accepted by the public.”
