He was a mercenary in the Rhodesian army. In September 1980 he formed the League Against Homosexuals in an effort to fight the formation of a gay liaison committee by the Toronto Board of Education. The League distributed thousands of pamphlets entitled “Queers Do Not Produce: They Seduce” during this time. Von Goetz was arrested in the Spring of 1983 for possession of an explosive device. The device was a live hand grenade he claims was a “going-away present” from his military friends, which he managed to misplace the grenade when moving apartments.
