Born Sheldon Ball, she was the first Canadian to have undergone gender reassignment surgery while in police custody, as well as the first to serve time in both male and female prisons. She was serving a life sentence for murder at the Edmonton Institution. The operation was paid for by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan.
