Allen Spraggett was a radio and television show host, columnist, and the religion editor for the Toronto Star. He was interested in the study of the paranormal and other psychic phenomena. He wrote a syndicated weekly column, “The Unexplained,” from 1972 to 1977 and hosted the CBC paranormal-themed quiz show “Beyond Reason” from 1977 to 1980. In February 1979, he was caught up in Winnipeg’s “juvenile sex-for-cash” scandal. In 1980 he was found not guilty of two charges of gross indecency with the presiding judge stating that there “is a nagging suspicion the stories given, upon which these charges are based, could have been stories given to satisfy the investigating officers.”
