James Egan was a gay activist and the first Canadian in an openly gay relationship to be elected to public office. He and his partner Jack Nesbit challenged the courts over spousal allowance benefits in 1988, leading to the landmark decision that sexual orientation is a protected basis of discrimination in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
