Jane Rule was a teacher, activist, and writer who explored lesbian relationships and themes in her work. Her writing was regularly featured in the Body Politic, and also appeared in periodicals such as The Ladder. Her first novel, Desert of the Heart (1964), is considered a classic of lesbian literature and was adapted into a film in 1985. In 1978, she won the Canadian Author’s Association award for Best Novel for The Young in One Another’s Arm. Rule’s work is considered significant in that it portrayed the everyday lives of lesbian women in a time when it was considered taboo. Rule was awarded the Order of British Columbia in 1998 and the Order of Canada in 2007.
