Dan White

Dan White assassinated Harvey Milk and San Francisco mayor George Moscone on November 27, 1978. In trial, White’s lawyer claimed that the assassination was committed in a state of diminished capacity. Though homophobia was never an explicit motivation for the assassinations, White did confess that he “saw the city as going kind of downhill.” He was charged with manslaughter, not murder, resulting in the White Night Riots. He was in jail for just over five years before being released. White died by suicide on October 21, 1985.
