Don Cormier

He planned a gay picnic in Moncton for 1 July 1981, but Moncton was a conservative city and had no gay organizations. Fearing an influx of homosexuals into the city, the Moncton City Council passed a by-law amendment forbidding organized groups of more than forty people from assembling in Centennial Park, where the picnic was to be held. In spite of this, about 100 gay men and lesbians attended the picnic and stayed in the park, though they were watched by a large number of police. In August of that year Cormier formed Moncton’s first gay organization, which didn’t have a name at the time.
