Barry MacDonald worked in radio and was hired as the Communications Manager for the CBH in 1949. MacDonald said that homosexuality was deemed too controversial for the CBC and that they would therefore ban gay service announcements; however, the CBC had not conducted polls to determine if Canadians believe homosexuality to be controversial.
