Chris Vogel

Chris Vogel was co-chairperson for the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties. In February 1974 he married Richard North in Winnipeg, under the blessing of Reverend Norman Naylor. Their marriage was not recognized by the province, and they took their case to the courts. The case ended in December that year when Judge Alan R. Philp ruled that they could not be married because they were the same sex. Vogal and Stuart Russell were elected delegates of Gays for Equality to the annual provincial NDP conference in 1975, and were allowed to operate an information table. Vogal also helped coordinate the course “Homosexuality and Social Institutions” at the University of Manitoba’s Continuing Education Division in 1980.
