He was an instructor of mathematics and film studies at the University of Waterloo. Prior to a guest lecture on 14 January 1981 he ordered an openly gay student, Greg Synenko (#GSYN), to leave the classroom in order to “protect” the guest. Dueck apaprently thought that allowing the gay student to remain would lead the class to think the lecturer was also gay. The guest was ironically the openly gay filmmaker David Demchuk (#DDEM), who had been invited to speak by Synenko, though Dueck was somehow not aware of this fact. The event became a small scandal, and Dueck resigned soon after.
