Don Winterton

Don Winterton was a Vancouver police chief. In 1977, following the murder of Emanuel Jaques in Toronto, he announced a crackdown on the “epidemic” of juvenile prostitution in Vancouver. On Aug. 11, 1979 he described a demonstration protesting the lack of police response to anti-gay violence in Vancouver as “an overreaction.” He then offered to meet with representatives of the gay community in private, but this offer was turned down with calls for a public meeting.
