Gail Bezaire

Gail (Gayle) Bezaire was a lesbian mother, who in January 1979 received custody of her two children. This decision was reversed in April of that year after she moved to live with her female lover. She appealed the decision, but the Ontario Court of Appeal refused to overturn the ruling. On Nov. 14, 1980 Bezaire took her children from the house of her ex-husband George Bezaire and went into hiding. In January 1981, after Gail and her lawyer failed to appear in court, her appeal to the Supreme Court of Ontario was dismissed and Justice A.W. Maloney ordered her to return the children immediately. The children were found in the U.S. in October 1985, and Gail Bezaire surrendered to police in Windsor, Ontario in December of that year. She was found guilty on all charges of abduction and harbouring that were laid against her.
