He was an openly gay student at the University of Waterloo and head of its gay student’s association. On 14 January 1981 he was ordered to leave class by his teacher, David Dueck (#DDUE), in order to “protect” the guest lecturer. Dueck apaprently thought that allowing the gay student to remain would lead the class to think the lecturer was also gay. The guest was ironically the openly gay filmmaker David Demchuk (#DDEM), who had been invited to speak by Synenko, though Dueck was somehow not aware of this fact.
