Harvey Milk

He became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California on January 8, 1978. He held this position for 11 months, during which time he passed a gay rights ordinance for the city. He was assassinated on November 27, of the same year. In 2009 he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
