Mel Lastman was the founder of the furniture chain Bad Boy and Mayor of North York, Ontario from 1972 until 1997. He became the first mayor of the newly amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998, serving until 2003 when he retired. He was a controversial figure during his political tenure. In 1977, Lastman announced his intention to give Anita Bryant a medal for “her crusade against homosexual activists.”
