Mel Lastman was the founder of the furniture chain Bad Boy and mayor of North York, Ontario. When North York became part of Toronto in 1998 he served for three years as mayor of Toronto, until 2003 when he retired. He was a controversial figure during his political tenure. In 1977, Lastman announced his intention to give Anita Bryant a medal for “”her crusade against homosexual activists.”
