Pat Murphy

Patricia (Pat) Murphy was the Vice-President of the Community Homophile Association of Toronto (CHAT). She resigned from the organization along with four counselors on Nov. 21, 1972, citing the organization’s limiting structure and conservative goals. She was an active protester who organized and attended many rallies and demonstrations. For example, she hosted a rally protesting Anita Bryant’s Toronto visit in January 1978. Murphy was also part of the Brunswick Four. In 1974 the group formed after Murphy and three other women refused to leave the Brunswick House Tavern in Toronto for singing “I Enjoy Being a Dyke,” which the manager objected to. They were arrested and charged with creating a disturbance and obstructing the police. Murphy was acquitted on the charge of causing a disturbance.
