Robert Coates was a Conservative MP for the Cumberland-Colchester riding in Nova Scotia. First elected in 1957, Coates served 11 terms. In 1971 CBC-TV aired a documentary about gay life in New York, and Coates called it “vulgar and distasteful” in the House of Commons.
