George Hislop was a gay rights activist and the first openly gay person to run for municipal office in Canada. He co-founded the Community Homophile Association of Toronto (CHAT) in 1971, and was an organizer of We Demand, a gay rights demonstration on Parliament Hill in August 1971. As an owner of the Barracks bathhouse, Hislop was charged with being a keeper of a common bawdy house, but was later acquitted. He spoke at rallies, conferences, and events on the topic of homosexuality and gay liberation.
